Research Specialist in Structural Bioinformatics and Molecular Evolution
Dr. Martín Graña is a prominent Franco-Uruguayan scientist who has been working as a Staff Scientist at the Bioinformatics Unit of the Institut Pasteur in Montevideo since November 2007. His research focuses on the application of computational approaches to solve fundamental questions about biology, with a key emphasis on the three-dimensional structure of proteins, their molecular function and their evolutionary history.
Areas of Specialization and Research:
Dr. Graña’s scientific work focuses on cutting-edge research lines, where he has led and collaborated on multiple projects:
Structural Bioinformatics and Molecular Function: Uses the analysis of the 3D structure of proteins as a central axis to understand their function at the molecular level.
Molecular Evolution and Deep Phylogenies: Investigates the evolutionary history of genes and proteins to unravel their origins and diversification over time.
Genomics and Human Diseases: Applies computational genomics tools for the diagnosis and research of human diseases, with a particular focus on mitochondrial diseases.
Origin of Key Cellular Mechanisms: Leads projects that seek to understand the origin and evolution of fundamental biological processes, such as the mechanisms of cell membrane fusion (origin of sex)..
Current Position and Outstanding Scientific Activity:
Associate Researcher, Bioinformatics Unit, Institut Pasteur de Montevideo (2007 – present).
Scientific Editor at eLife: He is a member of the Board of Reviewing Editors of the prestigious scientific journal eLife (2022 – present).
Principal Investigator in Competitive Projects: He has been principal investigator or co-investigator in multiple projects funded by agencies such as ANII and CSIC.
Author of High-Impact Publications: He has an extensive list of peer-reviewed publications, including articles in renowned journals such as
Nature Communications, Current Opinion in Cell Biology, and Human Genomics..
Teaching and Training of Human Resources:
Graduate Program Organizer and Lecturer: He has extensive experience organizing and instructing numerous national and international graduate courses on bioinformatics, phylogenetics, and protein biology.
Young Researcher Tutor: He actively participates in the training of new generations of scientists, supervising undergraduate and doctoral student theses.
Academic Training:
PhD in Structural Bioinformatics – Pierre & Marie Curie University (currently Sorbonne University), France (2007).
DEA in Comparative Genomics – Paris 11 Orsay University (currently Paris-Saclay), France (2003).
Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences (Biophysics option) – University of the Republic, Uruguay (2001).
